HAVING A FRIEND / FAMILY MEMBER AS YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER
Be very wary of a friend doing your wedding photos!
We have to start with the warnings sorry! Many friendships have been destroyed over this unfortunately - a friend is great to do your make-up / hair etc as you can see the results beforehand - but with photos you get one chance & one chance only. When you get the photos back it is too late!
Many people have great artistic flare behind the camera but taking a wedding is a very intense and nerve racking experience. Many things can and do go wrong - and an inexperienced person will generally not know how to avoid or deal with such problems. They often don't have the equipment needed either nor the backups that a good professional should have!
Friends or family members can also get triggered or wound up in family dynamics or may get distracted by seeing someone they haven't for a while. they nearly always lack the back up procedures essential for your special day.
If you insist on this option - be clear with your friend exactly what you want & be sure to reassure the person that you are not fickle & they are a life-long friend even if the photos don't turn out! Ensure they have a backup camera or two & a few lenses. Make sure they are using quality equipment and decide on digital or analogue (film)
If using analogue - make sure they use high quality film suited to the occasion (ie not kodak gold!) and get the film developed at a professional lab (not kodak or similar fast places the photos will never be as good).
If using digital ensure it is high quality (12mp or larger) DSLRand that they have adequate memory. Make sure that the photo if being printed, are done so at a professional lab. If you print them at home or at a cheap kiosk they photos will fade in a few short years.
Then go on a couple of different test shoots on different days - to get relaxed with the photographer & so he/she can start to take charge of the moments. They will need to take charge on the day in a much more intense atmosphere & with your whole bridal party - where time is of the essence. They need to be prepared for this as much as possible.
Make sure post processing is done with quality software to avoid loosing / damaging the images
Make Sure they get the photos developed / printed at a professional lab - not a rabbit or kodak store!
